Pearls of Wisdom: Commuters, Residence & Study Tips #6

Tips for Commuters:

-Use commuting time to study, read or catch up. Many students can spend up to an hour or more in transit each day. What better opportunity to catch up on readings, study for tests, or start making notes for your next assignment. Also, you can take the time on your morning commute to organize your upcoming day. The more organized you are, the easier it will be to get everything done.

-Look into discount transit passes. Not only does UTSU offer students a discounted TTC Metropass, but you can also score student discounts on the GO from our own registrars office located in Galbraith building room 157.

Tips for Residence Students

-There are many places close to campus where you can get groceries. Listed below are a few options. But don’t take our word for it, ask around to see what great spots your fellow students have discovered.

  • No Frills – The closest No Frills may be a bit of a hike, but if you have a friend with a car, have a membership to a car share program like zipcar or autoshare, or your parents are visiting this is a good choice for inexpensive food.

  • Chinatown – If cheap produce is what you are looking for then head south on Spadina to Chinatown. Chinatown starts at College and Spadina and goes south until Queen Street. There are many vendors along this route offering very inexpensive produce and fun Asian ingredients.
  • Bloor Street – There are a number of grocery stores along Bloor street which scores major points for convenience. Depending on how far you are willing to walk along Bloor between Christie and St. George there are a number of grocery options at various price points including a natural/health food store, numerous fruit and flower markets as well as some grocery chains (Sobeys and Dominion). Take some time to explore and find out what works best for you!

-Many of you may be living away from home for the first time. Make sure you take the time to learn to do laundry before you come to school. It will save you countless minutes staring at the dials on the washing machines, as well as heartbreak when you shrink, stretch and/or accidentally dye your favourite white tee-shirt pink.

Study Tips

-Use an agenda and write down your quiz dates and test dates as soon as you get them at the beginning of the year, so that you can see your busy times and plan accordingly.

-Library study spots. Take some time to find a few study places that work for you. There are many different libraries throughout the St. George Campus, all with different looks and feels. Take some time at the beginning to find a few places that work well for you, so that when study time hits you have a few options.
