Good to Know: Computers
If you already have a fairly new computer, it’s likely you already have what you need for school. If not, here are the system specifications our friends at the Engineering Computing Facilities (ECF) recommend:
PC System Requirements:
Processor: Minimum 2.66 GHz CPU Core 2 Duo, 1066 MHz FSB (front side bus) or better with Onboard LAN and/or Wifi capabilities
RAM: 2 GB of DDR2 RAM or better
Video Card: Integrated Graphics (minimum) or 256 MB PCI E, Direct X 10 compatible or better, PCI E card
A larger computer screen would also be an advantage for students. The ECF recommends a 19” monitor to be a minimum size for a standard monitor, or a 20” for a widescreen monitor.
If you aren’t familiar with what these numbers mean, just print this out and take it to a computer store and the sales person will be able to help you. If you’re buying a PC, there are so many different brands of hardware that we can’t recommend one brand over another. If you are using these specifications to upgrade a current computer or build one from pieces (this can be done by going to a computer hardware store) then remind the sales person to make sure the hardware components are compatible with each other. If you’re buying a pre-made computer then everything should already be compatible.
Also, while it’s not necessary for U of T Engineers, you may want to consider a computer that has a built in DVD player (they’re standard in most machines) to watch movies when you need a break!
