Pearls of Wisdom: Commuters, Residence & Study Tips #2
Tips for Commuter Students
- If you live close to downtown Toronto, you may want to consider biking/rollerblading to campus instead of taking the TTC to save money, get exercise and enjoy the city when the weather’s good.
- At the end of the winter term, some of your friends who live in Residence will have extra money on their meal cards that will be non refundable. If you’re very nice to them, they may buy you some free meals.
Tips for Residence Students
- If you have any serious food allergies or health conditions, it would be helpful to tell your roommate and Don so they can respond if anything happens.
- Mid-September, there will be a poster sale on campus where you can buy posters and pictures to decorate your room.
Study Tips
- Study “outside the box”.
As a method of review, solve your problem sets and textbook questions out of context. Copy them onto cue cards, shuffle them up, and then try to solve them. On a test or exam, your instructor is not going to tell you what theory or topic a question relates to. You need to learn to identify the questions and solving methods on your own.
- Cramming is not the best way to prepare for a test.
Your brain is a little like your stomach in that it needs time to digest the information you feed it before your body can use it. Learn things a little at a time and give yourself the chance to work with concepts and build upon them gradually. All cramming does is leave you feeling full, yet unsatisfied.
