Engineering Student Newspapers
Think engineers only have strength in math and science? Think again! Here in Engineering at U of T we have some of the best writers on campus!
Engineering students have two newspapers: The Toike Oike (our humour paper) and The Cannon (our more serious paper). Both of these papers are completely run by engineering students.
The Toike Oike
“The Toike” was first published in 1911. Originally intended as a serious forum for communication between the members of the Engineering Society, it has developed into a humorous newspaper. It is one of the most widely read papers at the University of Toronto, being snapped up instantly as copies are distributed across campus.
The Cannon
The Cannon is the official engineering newspaper at the University of Toronto. It was founded in 1978 as a way to separate the humour of The Toike from the more serious and informative news in engineering.
Whether you have big dreams of being editor, or being an occasional correspondent, both papers thrive on student involvement. If you prefer not to write, there’s a place for you too; both papers need photographers, layout artists and distributors.
If you decide not to get involved with one of the newspapers, make sure you pick up your copies to keep on top of what’s going on within the Faculty. Each paper is published monthly.
