First Year Support

Attending university is an exciting time in your life. It’s also a major life transition, where you move from being a senior in high school, to a first year university student. As a first year student, you may have your first real taste of independence and freedom, like being away from your family and home. Of course, this new found freedom also means new found responsibility—this includes learning what it takes to manage the many aspects of engineering student life so that you can be successful in meeting the requirements to graduate. That’s where the First Year Office comes in. They’re here to help you make the transition from high school to university life.

Our First Year Office is the official “home-base” for all first year students. To help students make the transition from high school and develop the skills needed to succeed in university, the First Year Office offers counselling services and seminars on time management, reading & note taking, and memory & concentration. Other services in the Faculty include the Math Aid Office and the Engineering Communication Centre.

The first year community in U of T engineering is small and closely-knit. Our largest first year classes usually seat 80-120 people. After spending just a few months in the Faculty, you will see that we’re really not that large at all. Engineering is like a small community within the larger university setting.

The First Year Office will always be available to offer a helping hand and make the transition a smooth and easy one, helping you start a new and exciting part of your life as an engineering student.
